Does an AI Toy Record Everything Your Kid Says?

The honest answer is: it depends on the toy. Some AI companion toys use always-on microphones that listen continuously. Others use a push-to-talk button, so the toy only records when a child is actively pressing it to speak. Neither approach is automatically good or bad, but they are very different, and any parent buying one of these toys should find out which one they're getting before they bring it home.

How an AI toy "hears" your child in the first place

For a toy to respond to what a child says, it has to turn sound into text or some other format a computer can understand. That step, called speech processing, has to happen somewhere: either on the device itself, or on a server the device sends audio to over the internet. Most AI toys today rely on the second option, because on-device processing powerful enough to hold a real conversation is still expensive and hard to fit into something the size of a plush toy.

That's the part worth understanding: if a toy can talk back in a natural way, audio (or a transcript of it) is very likely leaving the device and going somewhere else to be understood, even briefly. That's not automatically a privacy problem. It's just how the technology works right now. What matters is what happens to that audio after it's processed: is it stored, for how long, who can see it, and can a parent delete it.

Always-on vs. push-to-talk, in plain terms

  • Always-on microphone: the toy is listening for a wake word or is simply on and picking up sound continuously, similar to a smart speaker. This can make conversation feel more natural, but it also means more audio is captured, including background conversation the toy wasn't meant to hear.
  • Push-to-talk: the toy only captures audio while a button is held or pressed, similar to a walkie-talkie. Less convenient in the moment, but it draws a clear line around exactly when the toy is capturing anything.

Ask which one you're buying. Any toy maker should be able to answer that clearly, on the spot.

Questions worth asking about any AI companion toy

This isn't specific to one brand. Before buying an AI toy for a child, these are the questions worth getting real answers to, in writing, from the privacy policy, not just from a salesperson or a product page:

  • Does it store raw audio, or just a text transcript? Raw audio recordings are more sensitive than text, since they include voice, tone, and background sound.
  • How long is data kept? A policy that says data is deleted after a defined window is different from one that keeps it indefinitely.
  • Can a parent delete their child's data on request? There should be a clear, working way to do this, not a vague promise.
  • Is there a parent dashboard or account where you can see what's been collected? Visibility matters as much as control.
  • Is any data sold to third parties, or used to train unrelated products? This should be a plain no, stated clearly, not buried in legal language.
  • Who can access the data internally? Employees, contractors, or automated systems, and under what circumstances.
  • What happens if the company is acquired or shuts down? Children's data has ended up in the hands of new owners before. It's worth asking about upfront.

These questions matter because the toy category is new and the track record isn't perfect. In 2017, a connected teddy bear called CloudPets was linked to a data breach that exposed roughly 50,000 children's voice recordings and account details, because the recordings had been stored on a database left unsecured online. It doesn't mean every AI toy is unsafe. It means "where does the audio go" deserves a real answer before purchase, not an assumption.
