SkyBuds vs Dex: Two Very Different Language Learning Toys
Share
Dex is a $249 handheld camera with a touchscreen that teaches kids a new language through photos of the world around them. SkyBuds is a screen-free AI plush that holds real conversations in more than 75 languages. Same goal, very different tools, and the right pick comes down to whether you want a dedicated learning gadget or open-ended talk.
Full disclosure before we go any further: we make SkyBuds. We will be fair to Dex, and there are families where Dex is clearly the better buy. We will say so.
What Dex is
Dex (dex.camera) is a handheld AI language camera for ages 3 to 8. Your child points the camera at real things and the device names them in the target language. It covers 16 languages, lists at $249, and uses a subscription for the full content library. It ships now and comes with a 90-day guarantee. It also has a touchscreen, which matters a lot to some families and not at all to others. For exactly how the lessons work day to day, check their site.
What SkyBuds is
SkyBuds are screen-free plush companions for ages 3 to 10. There are three characters: Ash, a brave fire dragon, Pearl, a calm and clever unicorn, and Sprout, a gentle nature bear. They talk back, remember past conversations, and tell personalized stories your child can steer. They speak more than 75 languages, so a child can chat in Spanish at breakfast and switch to English after school. The core experience, talking, stories, and the base voice, is free for life with no subscription. An optional SkyBuds+ household membership at $19.99 a month adds extra voices. Parents handle setup, controls, and daily activity review through the Firefly Jar app on the App Store and Google Play.
The screen question
This is the biggest practical difference. Dex has a touchscreen. Plenty of parents are fine with that on a learning device. If you are trying to keep screens out of little hands entirely, though, a screen is a screen. SkyBuds has none. Everything happens through voice, the way a conversation with a person does.
How each one teaches
Dex is a dedicated tool. Pointing the camera at real objects ties the word to the thing itself, and the subscription adds more content on top. For how the day-to-day sessions actually work, check dex.camera.
SkyBuds is conversational. There are no lessons or levels. A child practices a language by using it: asking their plush questions and steering a bedtime story in Spanish instead of English. That looser approach suits kids who learn by talking, and families who want language mixed into play instead of a study session.

Which one should you buy?
Buy Dex if you want a dedicated language tool, your target language is one of its 16, and a screen does not bother you. It ships now and carries a 90-day guarantee. For a family treating language learning as a real project, it is the better buy today. At $249 plus a subscription it is a serious purchase, so check their site first to confirm the languages and content fit.
