Are AI Companion Toys Safe for Kids?

Short answer: it depends on the toy. Some AI companion toys carry real risk for young kids: always-on microphones, vague data retention, content filters that occasionally let the wrong thing through. Others are built around push-to-talk mics, clear data rules, and a filtered model. Common Sense Media has warned against this category for kids 5 and under and urged caution for ages 6 to 12, and that caution is fair. Skip the category-level question. Ask what this specific toy does, and whether you can verify it.

The real risks, and what to actually check

AI companion toys are a new category, and the concerns raised about them are real, not hypothetical. Three come up again and again.

Always-on microphones

Some toys listen continuously, which means audio (including background conversation that has nothing to do with the toy) can get captured and sent somewhere. Push-to-talk, where the child holds a button to speak, is the safer design. Before buying, find out which one you're getting.

Data storage and deletion

A child's voice is biometric data. Ask where it's stored, how long it's kept, and whether you can delete it. "We don't sell your data" is a start, but it doesn't answer what happens to a recording six months from now.

Content filtering

This gets less attention than it should. An industry study found that roughly 27% of AI toy outputs in testing were inappropriate for the age group. Ask a company directly what its filtering approach is, and whether an adult can review conversation logs.

None of this means AI companion toys are automatically bad. It means they deserve the same scrutiny you'd give any product that listens to your kid and talks back.

• What content filtering is in place, and has it been independently tested?
• Does the company sell or share data with third parties?

If a company can't answer these clearly, that's worth knowing before you buy, not after.
