Audio Players vs AI Companions: Two Different Screen-Free Bets

If you want a machine that plays great stories on demand, buy an audio player. If you want a toy your child can actually talk with, that is what AI companions are for, and the two categories solve different problems even though both get called screen-free.

What an audio player is
Tonies and Yoto are the big names. With a Toniebox, your child sets a small figurine on the box and it plays that character's recorded stories. With a Yoto, they slot in a physical card that holds an audiobook or other content. Both are one-way. Every word was written and recorded by a human before your child ever hears it, and the device plays it exactly as made.
Both ship now and the category is mature. Toniebox starter sets run around $140, with figurines roughly $15 to $40 each. The Yoto Player is $109.99 and the travel-size Mini is $79.99, with cards sold separately. Tonies works from about age 1, Yoto from roughly ages 3 to 12.
What an AI companion is
Curio, Haivivi's BubblePal, and our own SkyBuds are two-way. The child speaks, the toy answers, and the conversation is generated on the spot rather than played from a script. That is the whole appeal, and it is also the thing to weigh carefully.
For SkyBuds, and for Curio by its own statements, the conversation runs in the cloud, so expect these toys to need an internet connection to talk; check any specific toy's site. The honest trade-offs
An audio player's weakness is the flip side of its strength. The content is fixed, so your child cannot ask the narrator a question or steer the story somewhere new. And the library costs add up, since every figurine or card is a separate purchase.
AI companions carry different risks. The category is young. Common Sense Media publicly warns against AI companion toys for children under 5, and that warning deserves a straight answer: if your child is under 5, an audio player is the safer default, and Tonies in particular is built for that age. There is also company risk. Moxie, a $799 companion robot, shut down in late 2024, and the robots stopped working when the servers went dark in January 2025, with no refunds. Families were hurt by that, and it is fair to ask any AI toy maker how they plan to avoid it, us included.

Which kid suits which
Pick an audio player if your child is under 5, or mostly wants stories at bedtime and in the car. In those cases Tonies or Yoto is a better buy than anything we sell, and both ship today.
Consider an AI companion if your child is 5 or older and would rather be part of the story than listen to one. Within the category, be honest about fit.
