When Tonies is the better buy
Any child under 4. Set the figurine on the box and the story plays. A 2-year-old can run it alone. Common Sense Media also publicly warns against AI companion toys for children under 5, and we think that caution deserves a straight answer rather than a shrug. If your child is 2 or 3, an audio player is the right call, and Tonies is the best one for that age. The catch is the library cost. Figurines run roughly $15 to $40 each, so the collection gets expensive over the years.
When Yoto is the better buy
The audiobook kid. A 6-year-old who burns through chapter books wants audiobooks, and audiobooks on cards are exactly what Yoto sells, at a lower entry price than Tonies. The Mini at $79.99 is the travel size. If listening is the whole point, and for a lot of kids it is, buy a Yoto and skip the rest of this post.
When SkyBuds is the answer
The kid who talks. The one who interrupts the audiobook to ask what happens next, then argues with the ending. An audio player cannot answer them. SkyBuds can.
