Questions to Ask Before Buying an AI Toy

Before buying an AI companion toy, there's a specific, checkable set of questions worth asking any company that makes one, not just the brand you're leaning toward. These aren't trick questions. A company that has actually thought through privacy, safety, and practical costs should be able to answer all of them in plain language, usually on its own FAQ or privacy policy page. Use the checklist below to compare toys, or to hold any single toy to a real standard before it ends up in your kid's hands.

Privacy and data

  1. Does it record everything, or only when it's activated? Some toys listen continuously for a wake word. Others only capture audio after a button press or squeeze. That's a different privacy posture, and it should be stated clearly, not buried.
  2. Where does the data go, and who processes it? Ask whether audio or text is processed on the device itself or sent to a server, and if it's sent out, whether that's the company's own infrastructure or a third-party AI provider.
  3. How long is data stored, and can you get it deleted? Some companies keep full conversation logs indefinitely. Others discard the exchange shortly after the toy responds. A parent should be able to ask for a child's data to be deleted and get a straight answer about what that actually removes.
  4. Is any of it sold to third parties or used to train other products? Storage and training are two different questions. A policy can discard data quickly for one purpose while still allowing it elsewhere. Ask about both directly.

Safety and content

  1. How is content filtered for age-appropriateness? Ask what stops the toy from bringing up topics that aren't appropriate for a 4-year-old versus an 8-year-old, and whether filtering changes based on the age you set up.
  2. What happens if the AI says something off? No language model is perfect. Ask what guardrails exist, and what the company's plan is when something slips through anyway.
  3. Is there a way to report a problem? Look for an actual support channel, and ask how fast a reported issue gets looked at. A contact form nobody reads doesn't count.
  4. Does the company hold any outside safety certification? Certifications like kidSAFE are awarded by a third party after review, which is different from a company simply describing itself as safe. Ask what's actually been earned versus what's in progress.

Practical

  1. Does it need wifi to work, and does it stop working without a subscription? Some toys are unusable offline. Some require an ongoing subscription just to keep the AI conversation features running after an initial period. Ask what the toy can and can't do if you stop paying or lose connection.
  2. What's the total cost, including any subscription? The price on the box is often not the full annual cost. Ask directly whether a subscription is required, optional, or bundled in.
  3. What age is it actually designed for? A toy marketed broadly to "kids" may really be tuned for one part of that range. Ask what age band the content and interaction style were built around.
  4. Is there a parent dashboard or transcript access? Ask whether you can see what your child has been talking about, and whether that access is easy to find or something you have to dig for.

If a company can't answer these

No maker of a toy that talks to kids should be uncomfortable answering questions like these. If a company hedges or can't point you to a page where the details are written down, that tells you something on its own. Ask directly and see what comes back.

For SkyBuds specifically, these same questions are addressed on our FAQ page and privacy policy. SkyBuds is kidSAFE Listed, an earned certification, and our COPPA compliance work is in progress, not yet complete. We'd rather you check those pages directly than take a summary here as the final word.
